Dose-Cal — Pediatric Dosage Calculator Mobile App

Overview

Dose-Cal is a dedicated mobile application designed to ensure safe, guideline-aligned medication dosing and routine calculations in pediatrics. Clinicians enter age, weight and other parameters; the app computes recommended drug doses with built-in checks against improbable values. Additional calculators — including maintenance fluids, blood volume and transfusion volume, and BMI percentile — consolidate common paediatric math into one interface, standardizing decisions and reducing manual error.

Clinical Problem

Paediatric dosing depends on age, weight and sometimes body surface area. Under time pressure it is easy to miscalculate, transpose units or miss guardrails, which risks both under- and overdosing. In settings with limited staff or variable training, an easy-to-use, validated calculator can markedly improve safety and consistency.

Methodology

  1. Implement guideline-based formulae for drug dosing with sanity checks and unit validation.
  2. Provide additional calculators for maintenance fluids, blood volume/transfusion and BMI percentile inside the same app.
  3. Use role-based registration/verification (e.g., KMC or institution ID) and allow offline-first operation with secure local logs.
